Customizing Color Schemes, Layout, And Fonts

When you start a website or you’ve been running a website for a long time you have options, many options. If you look up how to go into maintenance mode and backup your theme and be prepared to safely make and test adjustments then you are ready to go. Always make sure you have your current version saved and copied so if you make a mistake which stops your setup from working you will be able to recover from where you left off before you tried to make changes.

Ok lets get to the fun stuff.

Color Schemes

There are oh so many interesting things to know and think and say about color schemes. How your website flows depends on it. You would generally try to come up with colors that go well with your header and logo for your website. Don’t take it out of account that what you want to do might work well or even do better to get better results. There are occurrences in history where entire reworks are done. New Logo, theme swap, new header image.

That means you can change your logo color and site name too. You can see I have my site name and logo together at the top of the page. What I’m interested in talking about is the colors and the color choices we make.

I chose blue mostly because about 15 years ago when I started the original Ditto Effect I did research that said 40% of the top companies ranked out there had mostly blue logos. So I decided and I chose to converge with good marketing research. Depending on your area of expertise or site category there may be as many as many options to choose from. As for the 2 I decided to go for black (because black is cool) and my logo includes the color black.

And so I used black for the menu pages (under the header) so I could keep the simple feel to the experience.

There was a color wheel tool I used to use that would give you exact opposite colors when you choose. Here is one I found right away when I typed in “color wheel tool” that works right away. Color Wheel Tool simple click and drag to the color you want. Type in the color hex and see what color matches it gives you. When you mouse over the color palette color results it says the hex there too. There are also a number of drop down selections you can choose for the definition of the type of color set you are going for. Eg. complementary, monochromatic, square, ect.

There is a natural science behind therapeutic and effective color schemes and each of the patterns this color wheel tool can give you are really great ideas. They are actually awesome choices to get the right feel and atmospheres you’d want to create. Don’t stray from these choices.

The theory is all on that page too.

Layout

As for the layout you need to have the options you want available to you. In any case scenario you can look it up or ask for help from your theme’s support. And again make sure to keep track of files you are editing while you mess around. Sometimes you’d make a little mistake and have no clue where to go back to look.

Themes are important and mostly the chance we get is to choose from a list of themes that are provided to us. With WordPress you could search for themes based on features. There are plugins you can get to help if your theme might be missing something. But make sure it does what you want it to do.

Creating feature blocks, and table of contents, lead catch pages. Some of these things you might really want. For an example of how to be meaning to use a landing page for catching leads, I can choose to do a full width setting on my pages (sounds boring) which would let me add what I needed without the side bar as a distraction.

Generally drag and drops as well as insert or customize will let you create stunning designs given the set of features you have available to use.

The most important thing besides the color is how the navigation works. And I have a pretty good example. At the menu under the header at the top of the page I have a second choice where I half wrote a post and half put my navigation and you can see how it used to be with the navigation after the content I wrote.

It was too confusing to use but I fixed it with my Simple Site Navigation Strategy which replaced it.

Before using a theme you usually can do a preview or test it out if it upgrades to a premium version.

I chose a simple theme where I could put my own graphics the way I wanted and can do most of what I can imagine needing to.

Font

For a simple user I recommend mostly to use the fonts you are already using or have available that you know how to switch to. For the best control you’d want a theme that lets you customize the font as an option. Navigating fonts is a bit tricky. Some fonts aren’t available and it depends on what the installation would allow for.

Tutorials or support tickets to the theme provider or from a google search would help most.

Not having the wrong font is the most important. I suggest taking it easy on how much you want to stress about it unless it is obviously easy to change and you just need to pick the right one. It’s all up to the aesthetic and appeal you want. Certainly some will do better than others. Remember when you have the choice (know how to choose which font) it’s as easy as it seems.

My theme has a drop down list and I can choose anything. Which may be normal for themes.

My advice is to choose a font that avoids looking too complicated or seems awkward to read.
